Proposed by-law change regarding fences

On May 28, 2020, the RFCA will vote on a proposed by-law amendment that would add a specific type of aluminum fencing to the list of approved fencing materials.

Current language:

FENCES:

Height limited to a maximum of 6 feet.
Should be of natural wood or wood appearance.
Design should be shadowbox or picket to include open space between the vertical boards.
Please include aerial-view sketch of fence's proposed location on property.
May not be in the front of the house and may not extend toward the front of the house beyond a line even with the rear wall of house.
Must meet Board approval and Baltimore County regulations regarding size, materials, appearance and configuration.
The unfinished side of the fence must face toward the homeowner, and not be visible to neighbors on all sides. Natural weathering is preferred to painting the fence any color other than white.
There are special safety and traffic concern requirements for end-of-block homes. Baltimore County Code prohibits stockade and solid wood fences on these homes as such fences block the vision of drivers and pedestrians as they round corners.

Proposed additional language:

“Aluminum fences should be made of adequately strong and durable materials. Posts must be at least 14 gauge, pickets and top rails must be at least 16 gauge, gates must be at least 11 gauge. Fences must be black powder coated. Fences may be no more than 4 feet high. The style of fence allowed is either flat top or picket. The picket style may only have pressed spear adornments or a similar simple style. See examples below.”

This change is proposed to allow additional fencing options, that are in keeping with the historic nature of Rodgers Forge, for the community.
