St. Pius X Property for Sale

The Archdiocese of Baltimore is selling the St. Pius X property, which sits on 5.5 acres at 6342 York Rd.

There is a petition circulating online for Baltimore County to purchase this property and convert it to green space. This petition can be found here.

The text below is a call for action from Councilman Mike Ertel:

Baltimore County has a unique and rare opportunity to add much-needed green space and playing fields right in the middle of Towson and its densely populated surrounding communities. This is because the former St. Pius School Property on 5.5+ acres at 6342 York Rd. is for sale by the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

Key Facts About the Property:

  • Currently zoned DR5.5 - which does allow for residential homes.

  • Asking price for property is $4.6 million.

  • Program Open Space Funds could be used to purchase the property, but only for its assessed value, which is approximately $2.25 million. Additional monies would be needed to supplement the difference between assessed value and selling price.

  • The former school has a decent indoor gym that could be a great asset for future programs.

  • Almost 100 residents who live all around Central Towson attended a recent meeting to discuss the property.

  • Meeting attendees were unanimous in agreement that neighborhoods would like to see greenspace and recreational fields / opportunities on the site of the property.

  • The Towson Rec Council has struggled for 20 years with lack of playing fields.

  • Surging numbers of girls playing sports means many teams are not getting field space they deserve.

  • The property is walkable for numerous neighborhoods.

What can YOU do? Let our County Executive Johnny Olszewski and the Baltimore County Director of Rec & Parks, Bob Smith, know what you think. Email your thoughts, share your stories, and speak from the heart about what you have experienced due to lack of green space/fields, and what you would love to see happen on this vacant property. Ask your friends and neighbors to do the same!
